Printer drivers in 2026 are still worse than software from 1998

We have self-driving cars and AI that can pass the bar exam, but if I try to print a single 2-page PDF, my printer goes into 'Offline Mode', demands a firmware update, claims it's out of cyan ink when I'm printing in black and white, and requires a 400MB utility app just to scan a piece of paper.

Forced OS updates that restart your computer in the middle of working

I stepped away from my desk to make a cup of coffee. I had three unsaved spreadsheets open and a critical report drafted. I come back to a screen that says 'Updating Windows: 12% - Do not turn off your PC.' Who authorized the OS to override my active session and close my work?!

Auto-playing video ads with sound on news websites

Trying to read a simple local news article on my phone is like navigating a minefield. Two banner ads pop up, the text jumps down three paragraphs while loading, and then a video ad starts blasting audio at maximum volume in the bottom corner. I just close the tab immediately. Who thought this user experience was acceptable?

Every single appliance in my house does NOT need a Wi-Fi connection!

I bought a dishwasher last week. A DISHWASHER. Why does it require a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band and a 45-page privacy policy just so I can wash four plates and a mug? Yesterday my fridge got a firmware update failure and refused to make ice. Can we please go back to mechanical knobs that just work for twenty years?
